[image description: a vintage-looking illustration of a person in a dress reclining on a couch with cherubs about them, and another person hearing a long coat and tights with their hands reaching out to the couch. In white text overtop of the picture, at the top, is “Dude, OF COURSE I’m getting a happy ending!” and at the bottom: “I’m STRAIGHT.” End description.]

It’s kind of odd to reblog this twice in a row, but I wanted this to stand alone and then reply.
I have actually noticed the opposite in general modern lesbian fiction: it almost always ends happily. It’s been discussed a lot, and is mostly a reaction to the lesbian pulp books and earlier lesbian stories which always, always ended unhappily.
But maybe young adult books are different?
Spoilers ahoy! Tons of spoilers ahead.
Annie On My Mind ends happily (just barely). Hello, Groin: happy ending. Down to the Bone: happy ending. Empress of the World: happy ending. Keeping You a Secret: I believe it ends happily.
Kissing Kate: I can’t remember, and reading the last few pages, it isn’t clear.
Bermudez Triangle: unhappy ending. Far from Xanadu: unhappy ending, but that’s obvious from the beginning.
Spoilers end here.
But maybe it’s just the lesbian YA books I’ve read?
